okay welcome everyone I am Mary Beth Bell I am in the CTE Department a teaching Academy teacher and I'm co-presenting here with Doctor OV Kill Everybody I'm going to share some slides with you guys today and kind of go through our agenda and a few things that first so if you have a minute okay so welcome Condor staff today is May 21st and IM misspelled I'm going to present to you on tpr which is Total Physical response and dr. Maria is going to talk to you after about getepic a resource online that you guys can use for students or for your own family we have an agenda I know the better sorry we're going to do a community I'm going to talk about tpr and the four c's dr. Hovey will talk about get epic like I said and then we'll have time for a discussion questions and some time for you to play around with the software are norms today are to be respectful time Equity of voice positive attitude and be present so far our community Builder I thought that we could just go around and share whether you are a Cubs fan or a Sox fan I'm just bored so I am also a Sox fan Miss Johnson I guess I'ma go with the Cubs okay well thank you guys for participating in our community Builder so getting started here Total Physical mom's is the method of teaching language or vocabulary concepts by using physical movement to react to verbal input it is stress-free and it stimulates the way that children naturally acquire language purpose is to create a link between speech and action to boost language and vocabulary learning so this is really a or a that can be used and a lot of times it's for our elementary Learners Are Young Learners or are secondary language learners as you guys know I teach in the preschool so I wanna first just real simply demonstrate how this TTR works at a very simple level so here I have a ball can you say okay so I guess this is a good job students okay so it's very very simple and it's something that relates to kind of mine pathway CTE and if you'll notice I'm sure all of you have been in my classroom before but I have a picture of it here I'm in the preschool everything is labeled the tables are labeled table we label everything in English and Spanish the chairs are labeled the water fountain the kitchen everything in the bathroom everything is labeled for students and that helps them build their vocabulary teaches this coordination between speech and action are preschoolers play they play all day long when they're with us and we're so reinforcing the language so this tpr is typically associated with Young Learners or secondary language Learners as I mentioned it helps with vocabulary retention it actively uses both. cuz you're including a physical movement and language it encourages your student to listen and respond it's good for kinesthetic learning and it physically your students involved and sharing their knowledge so now I guess what does this have to do with us here in this remote world really tried to challenge myself and challenge my high school students and getting our preschoolers engaged in learning so how can we include them recently in the past couple years there's been a lot of discussion about these four seas I have a link here this is from the national Educators Association died it's a really good resource for you to look at it you can get it to work for you, I can't we can share these slides but your forces are creativity critical thinking communication and collaboration and these are skills that you want for 21st century and now how do we do this remotely and how can we include them in our experiences so I kind of wanted to share some of my experience present-day ons in the past Daenerys is a teacher where I see this connection between physical and new vocabulary and language Stokes when I was a learner I did not adapt well to online learning style I took classes in 2007 I took two classes and it just didn't work for me I'm very much as someone who has present and I really like to take notes I real like to be involved in the learning process with my students and Justin discussions between family and friends and colleagues the thing that I hear is when Stewie are given assignments they're all computer-based assignments and I think I've challenged myself and we should challenge our students to do things remotely that they can do at home and still shut it off few years ago I works with Miss Casey in geometry and we co-taught class and this was kind of one of their big assignments towards the end of the year and our students were on photograph geometry hunt so what we wanted students to do was learn how to use this vocabulary and find it in their everyday world and I really enjoyed this project because my students were able to use technology use their phones create something and explain the different things that they had learned in math and put it together and they had a lot of fun doing it the next year we kind of expanded this project I actually went on a field trip with Mr manjarres and we took our diverse Learners and general to the Shedd Aquarium and to the Sea projects Lake could they find pictures while we were out and about in the city and incorporate that in their learning and their experience this year we had preschool graduation and it was really difficult to celebrate that but I was really happy that my students were able to put together this collage for our preschool and I think it was great because we had four C's creativity communication collaboration and critical thinking so couple other things that I've been working and some of the things that I wanted to talk to you guys about today that has been useful for me was creating a classroom environment at home a couple of the things that were on my desk at school where this plant I'm very fortunate that I have my students for 3 years and I really get to build a rapport with them and this was on my desk and it has her graduation years in it this cookie jar was on my. So it's nice I think when they log Mac me visually on our Google they have some comfort there a couple other props that are really useful to me are using old picture frames they work just the same as like your whiteboard i a kind of like I'm better because or sometimes have a residue and they seem to be hard to find nowadays and then these foam boards I think are very useful I use a lot of Post-it notes and painters tape and I'm able to use the same foam board I like this black one and it doesn't have to be. But it's actually gotten a lot of wear and tear on it so for teacher appreciation week the students and the Mission Academy I met with 11 groups and our big discussion question was is what makes a good teacher like what are the best teachers when I was meeting in small groups they were able to come up with these adjectives which are really inspiring and when I put them all together their pictures were not on here okay these are my seniors that I just kind of wanted to celebrate them but it was really amazing to see this foam board and their brainstorming and their ideas and our discussion how it evolved into the spinal cord and then all this stuff is removable and then I just reuse the sand uses for other discussions I think it gives them some continuity and where their focus is when were on these discussions and then the last thing I wanted to share with you guys was one of the projects we did preschool we have Story Time and art time so one of my first lessons I think it was really hard to engage with my students and you're in the snoo virtue World in they don't have their cameras on they want their emojis and things like that so I wanted to create a lesson that related to our content but there could also Sharon participate in physically read them this book it's called only one you and it's all these painted rocks all these fish and then their assignment was to make a painted rock and I definitely had more participation than this these were the ones that sent me their photos but it was really nice for each of them to share what they had made and feel like they contributed to our virtual classroom a lot of them use now polish on the rocks and it was just kind of you know what you have at home and what can you guys use so those are kind of the things that I've been doing I thought a lot about other assignments are other ways that you can be physical I think there's a lot of relation to math and science and health PE what can do what do they have what can I use at home I think we really have to consider those options and how we include our students and I think I was sleeping to yell at me all teachers we also have to get their missing out from being in the classroom of that engagement not only the one-eyed one that only the constant vocabulary that they're getting from other teachers I'm right they're getting us once or twice however many times you know they're taking a picture so it's a considered to be an end again this would go with access to they have these resources at home but you know if they have posted that home to say okay during Army we're going to write these words if they have with that you know vocabulary or with an item the better is going to go she's going to do a messy all activity and with the students in her and she's giving the kids like Jose and Marcos who are you know wheelchair about to start and she's telling me she's going to tell their assistants make sure they're sitting in the kitchen and so she's going to say some words and their now find those items and so you know those are things that they're going to remember they're going to remember that they wouldn't grab a picture of it or just speaking the word opportunities to touch to hold two items is going to be able to use it more effectively I think they also in the physical positive reinforcement whether it's sums up or snapping it's hard I find it very hard my students engaged but a lot of times I'm looking at their emojis but try when they speak to give them like a signal like you're doing a good job and I feel therefore more students are open to sharing yeah missing it as much as we are we're at with the discussions when you're here if it's quiet for a while and I'm like oh my gosh in class A couple of people would have said something only one person at a time and you're not seeing the other person's reaction where is in class your or if their pictures on their your you're able to see like Ross Perot or is there a special you there and so that's something bad that you know is definitely be missed out on that I also I also really like you know like if I can show them something and have it and reinforce it I didn't spend my 250 until a locked down so I was lucky enough to get a laminator but they're really helpful actually like cardstock I use a lot just to reinforce like these are the questions I want you guys to answer for me and then when you're going around with like 30 kids I had them choose one of these but just like a card stock paper I think it helps cuz they forget the question you know Ella in my reading class even though I'm not Wilson trained you know I did go to a couple of their session and you know they have the student says they're reading the word say the word is because that was one of our students have to tap is there because now they're on syllables but when they were just regular decoding using the phonetic sounds it's the weirdest cat and then run their fingers together to say the word cat and so if they're really slow is in decoding a processing there going to be a little faster so they'll get and so even that physical is going to help the movement of the hand is with speeding it and so even like now so now we're still young find that wanted to go with me to the snow be stuck in it's my first day I don't want that cuz I want anybody to feel like you're struggling I can't see their face but if you give them the time they start tapping it out and I'll remember you increasing which is awesome but I'm Wilson Wilson program itself we have tiles magnetic tiles and if I say the we're going to die words that rhyme with and they're using those little magnets and they're moving letters are by faith Wilson definitely uses getting getting the students to tomorrow but have them move in place so that that spelling can be increased and the engagement is definitely increased because I are we end up doing a lot of competition so it's really interesting how how the Wilson process is extremely structured they definitely use a lot of a lot of CPR do you want me to show up last night so if you are Claudia and open another Link in your computer the link is get epic.com and so what it's going to do is going to let you know a lot of you to open an account and it's not going to take me very long but I'm going to show you some of the highlights most beneficial if you're able to go on and play with it on your own so I'm just going to tell you in a few select what the benefits are so it says that it's free until 6:30 the reality is this most likely it is literally library for everyone I'm trying to go to the next so good I forgot what number setting so I'm using this guy can I put heart that's that's my bitmoji so do for pleasure with family or students so because my stupid so I'm saying read this to your brother or sister so they're not reading first practicing witch and they're able to do it which is amazing but if they do you have a brother or sister or niece or nephew to use it that way and then we like I have signed up could use it as well if you want to use it with them or read something aloud to the students reading for decoding and comprehension practice it does have some of the books do assign 20 to 30 minutes sometimes my assignments are for even for e-learning read for 20 minutes or warm or iced tea or like yesterday I reminded them about going on at the wrestling more about war about video games history control of what they have in front of them it's only if they have internet and a computer will now they also have a library you could have time for this just be read out loud by a computer so I'll show you that so you can assign some of the books of quizzes find a particular book to them or you can say I want you to look at this John Russell say like a history teacher is doing on civil war Civil War and look at it for extra credit regular reading day do they go on Epic once a week so during a learning is more of an option so as a teacher so this is my view open it up you can see how easily it shows you right away who's been on this week so I'm like was a 24 minutes while when I'm for 2 minutes this is your go ahead and go to the next and then it gives them such a range of genres and reading level so really I want to say eighth grade but really it has so many genres and it goes all the way from Freaky so this is something that's about you and your kids can use with their preschoolers you know it just opens up your your library or something you can get as a resource because now they have access to all these books and it's something so I just watch Michael Jordan special every Sunday so excited for Bears ocean so so I ate when I suppose a he said he might stop over today so right and wrestling and then if you see can you point to the read to me Miss yeah so if you click on their then it'll get to be your friend if you can type in wrestling it's about wrestling then if you type in to me it's going to give you all the books with the read-option and that if you see yellow arrow it shows that that's how it looks to yeah and then as it's reading to you on the right it'll highlight highlights as you read and then anywhere do you click on it'll Define it for you so if it's amazing cabulary access if they don't already have it or if there's a misunderstanding and I'm like a science if you know it just goes on so there's so many and that if you see the purple Arrow at the bottom become play they can pause they just click on the page to go to the next page so you know it just isn't very very user-friendly like I said in my reading class on my students second grade as far as reading decoding some of them there ocean levels are all sober since I can breathe but some of their comprehension levels even though they're reading decoding at the first grade level their comprehension levels might be at the 5th grade level because when they listen to I can have high order conversations Federal we all have internet so and then as you're so stay at the Sao Jose had read for 30 I think it's a 34 minutes or however long that day so when I click on Jose's I can see what books has red marks it with the line if he's finished the book how long it took them to see what the date here at a so obviously that's an old picture Jose red on me for that tells me so as far as he's learning and engagement you can really see if they were just like if it said like one minute one and then go to the next one and so this really offer you know resources and then quizzes camping sign for Alba the so it'll tell you if a quiz is available so you can ask the teacher if you're signing a book you can look for books with quizzes and then assign it that way if you'd like it'll give you it'll show you the data and then the teacher the data and the quiz is going to be is to not reflect the level of the book so right is the Lexile 200 remind me about LaSalle effect and then when you assign a book this is a student view so your teacher sent you videos but you can send videos they have learning videos or if you have something to relate to something that you're teaching you can send a video you can send a book you can send an assignment and when they open it when they open their screen they're going to see the other end of you or whatever cast you aside and then so my my thought is you know I just wanted you to see highlights of it a great resource and even if you don't use it during eLearning reading teachers or Claudia is something you can share with your ESL teachers or your or any teacher actually in your department because it really does provide a resource memory research for students at the library but a resource for the teacher as you know history textbook a little too difficult for me student so I'm just going to research that same topic and assign them this book back to reach about it's really a great resource and stole my thought is for for the next you know if I could 10 minutes or however long you like if you want to I'll log in and create your classroom okay go back or talk to me a little bit about how you create the account don't send the classroom lights to the students do it or do you do it cuz I have to about 36 students about only 5 are showing up to anything yeah so to create an account we're going to do that next song go ahead yeah should we be honest with you yes so you're going to sign up as an educator if you don't have an account you can sign up or you can sign up with your Google if you want to make that easier to connect with your Google classes find either way Maria I really like the suggestion you had that our students share this with their younger brothers and sisters and read to them it's not likely they do if they have internet access so if you guys follow me spell since she's creating her first time cuz if it's already stopped so this way you can see it from her so I and your settings and you can create your your profile I would click Yaz Argo up a little bit sorry so you can allow students to free profile I would say because it allows how to create picture their preferences and all that so if they like books on a certain topic and they put their preferences when new books come out now as you can see I misspelled cold classroom code is a LS1 932 so when when you sign you saw on the right side put in your name and your email address to sign up on the left side is that class cold and so all students have to do is type in that passcode so it's very simple so if you want a stupid and so go ahead and put a student and go to roster so right now you don't have any students right because you haven't given any OHSU master have their names so that my students so then when they login if they login either by clicking a link that you send them or if they login.com type in your colon so they have two options to get in then they just find their name click on their name and now they're in their on their page so it's it's super user-friendly for the students and then you'll see you know you'll see your roster you could look up who who read you know their daily reading their rug but because for e-learning I'm checking it weekly I literally just looking on the right side when I open my pay because right now I'm not finding anything then it's going to be a different story we're especially am I reading students have always always have them read for pleasure because in reading the books that are very structured and they and still work we're learning comprehension with Siri so I don't want this to turn into bats right that epidemic has to read for fun so if he okay so now go to go down a little bit so you can see how you want to explore your reading rate Alexa, so it would be important to talk to your English style when we talk about Street their strengths and weaknesses I have I spend a couple of days talking about right we're all and they're all in my English classroom draw chart some of that discussion some of you is comprehension something that you can have this argument with the college student right because we all have our different strengths and weaknesses but then I have a true conversation about what their likes levels are if you are reading to learn that you have to read if you're reading independently at your lifestyle or else it's difficult unless you have something to talk about because if you know the computers that allows the independent reading decoding class were reading to decode we're practicing our sky fortunately. Which is why it's a key reason somebody or they can be a part of liquid in reading where they're at the recording himself and able to see where there were there errors but we didn't get to the point where I wanted to match them with some who is the worst I know what I was thinking but I'm just typing typing typing away and so we can get to the part where they're scoring someone else and I really next year for my reading to a really beautiful that level so that they're they're doing where is important to be able to to decode but also to notice when there's on airfare and so then I'll be able to use read Theory to assign books to read they're reading those two together or as a group however they want to do it you know they'll be able to to make those choices but I really love about it a tree so yeah and you can just like I said search for should ask the kids what's it what's a book you're reading with your kids Claudio there they're much older so they probably don't have those Goosebumps you know you can't really think free wow that's pretty. Maria will not choose my reading level system what what should I choose Amazon for you then is this is you how you're looking at it to assign so they say you're saying something or English your case I would say I would choose for rabies that's probably bridge and then assign that way and then can I give you the book sets for 7th graders would you still have some good books in there the higher read to me is so cool cuz I'd like highlights the word it makes it bigger than but they're saying I think it's very nice and I love that you can literally any word and it gives you the definition and then also the audio to tell you how to pronounce the word if you don't know how to pronounce it yeah it has a lot of fantastic features I can't wait I can't wait to try it this kids I've been looking for so I found a website where the there's like leveled readers online and the leveled reader will it will have audio for it and you can click on it but I feel like the topic are like very dry and boring and that's the problem that I'm having like yeah it's crazy because the kids can read it they can see it and they can't hear it but it's like going to the grocery store and buying vegetables and it's like I know that's not something that is interesting wrestling like that's super fun or whatever your video games set up and look it up I think it's a greater sign frustrated when you know like by doing the search but I think once they start picking couple books then when you open your misspelled can you stop sharing so I could show my now yeah I'm still on sharing I Thought You Could See Me Now so they start searching for their own books can you go see my page yes yeah alright yeah so once they start searching for their books they can like their top reads are going to come out as suggestions this is the time this is what they're supposed to be this is what they're screen is going to look like you know it's like you can just send a picture you know like I want to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid didn't like reading until he's an Avid Reader books that are like country peaches long but he didn't start reading for pleasure until literally Diary of a Wimpy Kid and so I love The Godfather I think himself as you can speak the types of books on their sitios if they want to check out the video and this is the top reading level you know the kind of stuff you're getting cat high school student doesn't wanna you know about that looks like this but it's a reading to someone right and they don't have to feel bad about so just didn't like how they also have that audiobooks teacher so audiobook is different than books are literal Optical listen. They're doing something else then they all have audio books available so you no longer washing the dishes running fantastic you know because this whole system available to them explore my greatest concern use my preference so I don't continue to throw them back but they can they can pick any grade and you know any type of book Etc somewhere where can I use their cell phones for this tablet computer as long as you have internet access access they're good I'm looking right now to see if there's an app there wasn't before but there might be now have other questions otherwise I'm going to stop the recording I think we've covered most of the content here unless there's something else you think we can share with everyone now there's an app there is an app just look up epic epic reading in your app store and there is an app available so of course Arkansas what we're finding your phone excellent and if you have if you have a
