Students who enroll in French I will learn to communicate in French within and beyond the classroom, will develop an understanding of francophone cultures, and will make connections between French and other disciplines.  The emphasis is on developing fundamental listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through the use of authentic texts, audio-visual materials, and lab resources.

Having successfully completed French I or its equivalent in an elementary FLES program, the student will continue to develop communicative competence through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities.  Such topics as describing your city & home, asking for and giving directions, making future plans, making comparisons, shopping, playing sports and instruments, ordering meals and talking about the past are explored. The use of audio-visual materials, authentic publications, web and lab assignments will continue to facilitate vocabulary building, grammatical structures and near-native pronunciation.

In Honors French II, the students will continue to develop further proficiency at an accelerated pace.  This course will integrate listening, speaking, reading and writing activities to improve students’ proficiency in each area.  The main focus is language acquisition through activities based on one of three themes: exploring change, exploring groups and exploring leisure.  Grammatical structures will be integrated into these themes in order that the student may gain a better understanding of Francophone cultures.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Students who enroll in Spanish I will engage in basic conversations, provide and obtain information, and express feelings and emotions as well as read and write Spanish of increasing grammatical complexity to develop fundamental listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through the use of authentic texts, audio-visuals materials, and Computer Lab resources. As the course advances, the students will gain a better understanding of culture through videos, literature and projects to help them identify diversity and similarities within their own culture. Students enrolled in Spanish I will be able to use the language both within and beyond the school setting as well as to use Spanish to reinforce concepts and make connections across the disciplines.

Advanced study and practice in the Spanish language to enhance oral and written proficiency.  The reading from a variety of sources and authentic texts/materials, which can include news articles, essays, and other literary texts, will be used as a point of departure for class discussion and written assignments.  The course reviews students’ knowledge of advanced Spanish grammar in context with intensive practice in writing and the transformation of texts.  The ultimate goal is to prepare the students for the IB Language B exam.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

In this course students will continue to view the fundamentals of the Spanish language. The purpose of this course is to enable students to begin to acquire proficiency in Spanish through a linguistic, communicative, and cultural approach. The development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills will largely be emphasized throughout this course. Students will participate in short conversations, ask and answer basic questions, read simple texts and write short paragraphs. The course will have a major emphasis on grammar, which will be comprised within communicative activities to help reinforce the understanding and use of the language. Students will be required to prepare and make presentations, either individually or in a group utilizing the Spanish language. Some presentations might include the following: stories, role-playing activities and reports. Non-native speakers of Spanish will acquire proficiency for communication, read for comprehension, write to express and reinforce the topics taught in this course. They will acquire all the basic elements in order to become a bilingual speaker.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

In this course students will be introduced to various components that will prepare them for the second level of Spanish. This course consists of the following elements: grammar, culture, and vocabulary. Spelling, reading, writing, listening and speaking skills are also integrated. Some of the topics to be covered in grammar are: accentuation, syllabification, conjugation of verbs, and parts of speech. The course also concentrates widely on culture by incorporating recent and important events such as immigration, the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and history of Spanish Speaking countries through various texts. It is through these texts that students will also learn the basics of literature analysis. Students will analyze poetry and short stories. Vocabulary and spelling will also be included throughout the Spanish Speakers will study a formal use of Spanish and become not only bilingual but also literate in their native language.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

In this course we intend to enhance our student’s fluency in the Spanish Language with the readings of the most well-known texts from selected authors, authentic articles, newspapers, magazines, videos, films, theater and poetry.  Students will use the Spanish language to make connections through content based instruction that weaves vocabulary and grammar into activities involving speaking, reading and writing on integrated topics of interest to Latino adolescents.  As an advanced level class, the class will be conducted only in Spanish and students must use the Spanish language at all times.  They will participate in discussions, debates and multimedia projects while developing a greater sense of cultural pride.

This course is designed to be comparable to fourth semester college/university courses in Mandarin Chinese.  The AP course prepares students to demonstrate their level of Chinese proficiency across the three communicative modes (interpersonal, interpretive and presentational) and the five goal areas (communication, cultures, connections, comparisons and communities).
