COURSE DESCRIPTION

The senior year course is the last in a four year sequence of history courses intended to prepare candidates for the Higher Level IB examination in May.

This class will focus on the major international events of the Twentieth century as prescribed in topics 1, 3, & 5 of the IB syllabus. Equal consideration will be given to political, social, economic, cultural and gender issues. This course will put greater emphasis on interpretation of primary source documents and the historiography of the century.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students will be expected to identify the causes of WWI and WWII and explain how these events effected different countries. Investigate the causes and effects of other major wars in areas outside of Europe. Students will analyze the transformation of Russian society from a pre-industrial state to a modern communist state, and explain the role that Lenin and Stalin played in Russia’s development. Explore the development of single party states in different regions of the world with an emphasis on the ideology of the leaders. Examine the origins of the Cold War from the perspectives of the USA and USSR, and analyze their relationships with the rest of the world.
