Curie DHH Student Achievements
Curie Student goes to Africa
Curie Junior, Sophia Castro, was selected by the buildOn organization to participate in a Spring Mission Trip to Thiadaby, Senegal, Africa. She was the first hard-of-hearing student selected for the trip from Curie. She left on March 17 and was gone for 2 weeks. Sophia stated that communication was not a problem. The community and students communicated a lot through hand gestures, pointing, and acting things out. She was placed with a host family that consisted of 3 moms, 2 dads, and 21 kids. She stayed in their cement house with 6 rooms. The latrine and shower were outside. Sophia enjoyed the food they prepared for her which included fresh eggs from the family farm, fried dough, fruit, rice, vegetables, and a type of chili for dinner. She learned how to barter for things in the markets which was a new skill for her. Sophia enjoyed spending time with the community which included a lot of dancing! She said she was homesick and really struggled with not being able to talk to her mom or the rest of her family but she recommends this trip to other students. Sophia says “It gets you out of your comfort zone and allows you to open up and gain confidence in yourself”! The Teachers of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing at Curie knew she would learn so much from this experience and are so proud of her.
