DANCE I 92010
GRADES OFFERED: 10-12
PREREQUISITES: Performing Arts approval
CREDIT:1 (Single Period)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class begins with an overview of human anatomy as it relates to dance movement, along with various injury-prevention techniques and standard dance terms. Nutrition and fluid intake will also be presented. A large portion of the introductory, beginning classes are devoted to stretching and conditioning, emphasizing proper placement and technique. In the beginning, relatively little class time is spent on combination's. As the class progresses and the students become more familiar with the basic stretches, isolation, and walks, more focus and time can be shifted to combination's. Beginning combination's will be kept simple, with the stress on clean technique and repetitions. Students will start slowly and then progress to faster and varied tempos.Student projects will include a critical book review, one dance critique, and one performance with summation. Participation is mandatory.
 

DANCE II 97420

CREDIT: 2 (Double period)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The class progresses as an extension from the introductory class. Dance II begins with the demarcation of various dance styles: ballet, modern, jazz, Afro, lyric, musical comedy, and hip-hop. Turns, hops, jumps, and leaps are introduced at this level. With these additions, proper placement, especially of the knee, is of the utmost importance to prevent injury. By this stage of instruction, students spend more time moving across the floor and are primarily focused upon coordinating isolation movement phases. Student projects will include a critical book review, two dance critiques, and two performances with summations. Participation is mandatory.

GRADES OFFERED: 11-12
PREREQUISITES: Dance major or teacher approval
CREDIT:2 (Double period)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The complexity of combination's with further emphasis on technique and style is focused. Pre-stretch includes mostly isolation's with advanced modern/jazz/ballet barre. Knowledge of classical ballet technique is a prerequisite for this class. It should be noted that advanced classes require major time commitments from each dancer. Student projects include dance reviews, three-performance minimum, one professional audition, two full three-to-five minute choreographed selections, and a final paper on four dance idioms (minimum use of seven sources), with little page and bibliography. Participation is mandatory.
 

CHOREOGRAPHY I/II -- STAGE & PERFORMANCE DANCE 90100
GRADES OFFERED: 11-12
PREREQUISITES: Dance major or teacher approval
CREDIT:1 (Single period)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students focus on dance styles that characterize our dance world in the new millennium. Artists will draw freely on all traditions that have developed through the centuries. The diversity of the class will include intermingled repertory within single choreographic works. Each dancer will discover his/her own reputation in proportion to the richness and complexity of personal creations. Student projects will include five dance critiques, four performances with summations, two professional auditions with summations, two two-to-three minute choreographed pieces (teacher approvals), participation in a musical production, and a final paper on four choreographers within the same dance idiom (five source minimum). Participation is mandatory.
